In primary school, students learn addition with natural numbers. In the addition operations, carry over (regrouping) operations confuse many students. After learning the logic of carry-over, it is easier to do addition operations.

What’s addition with carry over?

Addition with carry over is one of the most important subjects in mathematics. When adding numbers larger than 10, the carry over process is applied. Addition operations with carry over are performed with at least two digit numbers. The numbers in each digit can be 9 at most.
In order to perform the addition with carry over, the sum of the numbers in the units place must be higher than 10.

How is addition with carry over applied?

In order to be able to do carry over, the units digits must first be added. Afterward, the tens are summed up among themselves. If tens are obtained by adding units, the value must be included in the process of decimals. This is how carry over is done.

In order to perform the addition with carry over, it must have the following features:

∗Addition with carry over is applied with at least two-digit values.
∗At least one of the values in the sum of the digits must be above the number 9.

All the values in the units place must be added first. If this value is 9 or less, then the value is written in the units place of the result and the tens digit addition operation is started without performing the addition with carry over. If the value in the units place is 10 or more, then the addition with carry over is performed.

The values in the units place are added together and the result is written to the units place of the sum. Then the value in the tens digit is added to the next total. This is how addition with carry over is performed for three or more digit numbers as well as two-digit numbers.
