Materials that have the property of attracting or repelling objects such as cobalt, nickel, or iron and those made of these materials are called magnets. There are two different types of magnets. One of them is natural magnets and the other is artificial magnets.

Natural magnet: Magnets that are formed spontaneously in nature are called natural magnets.

Artificial magnet: Although it is not actually a magnet, the materials that have a magnet feature later are called artificial magnets.

At the same time, there are many different magnets depending on their usage areas and shapes. In particular, the shapes of these magnets vary.

  • Magnet with U shape
  • Ring magnet
  • Bar magnet

The ends of the magnets are two separate poles. One end is designated as North (N) and the other end as South (S).

Magnets affect substances such as iron, cobalt, and nickel, but also affect each other. In this direction, the same poles repel each other. However, opposite poles attract each other. Moreover, magnets repel each other without touching each other. This effect is called the magnetic effect. The resulting field is called the magnetic field.

Let’s take two magnets. Let’s bring the north ends of these magnets closer to each other. In this direction, the magnets will repel each other. Because the same poles repel each other before they even touch each other. In the same way, let’s take one end of the magnets as north and the other as south. They attract and stick to each other. Because opposite poles attract each other.

In addition, magnets do not lose their properties when divided into parts. There are also many different materials that magnets affect or not. In addition, the attractive or repulsive forces of magnets vary depending on the strength of the magnets. The pushing or pulling forces can also be increased or decreased by human hands. Thus, it uses magnets in many different areas and makes human life easier.

Substances Affected by Magnets

There are many different substances that magnets affect. These are usually different products made of materials such as iron, nickel, and cobalt.

Examples: nails, pins, needles, teaspoon

It is possible to give many other such examples. At the same time, there are many different substances that magnets do not affect.

Examples: aluminum, plastic, copper, silver, wood, porcelain, glass

What are the Uses of Magnets?

Magnets are used in many different areas in our daily life. These usage areas make our lives easier and allow human studies to become more useful.

 – Some of the materials in the garbage are separated with the help of magnets and go to recycling.

 – Magnets in the refrigerator allow the refrigerator door to be closed easily.

 – The magnet in the factory chimneys holds the iron in the smoke. In this way, it is prevented from harming the environment.

 – In addition, magnets can be found in many different technological products in daily life. For this reason, we should keep many technological products such as computers, mobile phones, or tablets away from magnets.

Note: The compass needle is a type of magnet. It works depending on the magnetic poles of the earth. When we are anywhere in the world, the colored part of the compass always points North.
