Teaching Positions, Left or Right Worksheet #2

The concepts of right and left are quite complex for children’s understanding. Children do not immediately understand what they mean. At the school-age, however, they should both know where the right and left hands are, and apply these concepts. Otherwise, it will be difficult for them to understand the teacher, learn to read and write.

You can help your child understand these concepts with some fun games. We listed some examples for you:

  • You can ask your child with eyes closed to take a certain number of steps in the left or right directions, turn left or right and continue until he/she reaches the place you targeted. Some little surprise may be waiting for him/her.
  • Ask your child to draw something on the paper to the right or left. At first, it is better to use only one concept in the instruction: “draw the sun on the right side.” You can then add the concepts of top/bottom and give more complex instructions: for example, show the grass at the bottom left of the page.
  • You can tie your child’s right hand with a red ribbon and left hand with a blue ribbon. Then give instructions like “with your right hand close your right eye, raise your left foot, grab your right ear, say the objects on your left” and so on.
  • You can emphasize the concepts of right and left while wearing their shoes.

Don’t forget to make use of our worksheets. They will help you a lot teaching the concepts of left and right.
